Due to the diligence of Deb Pierce, I am pleased to announce a new resource for SJMC students and faculty: the National Advertising Review Council Online Archives, the only electronic resource that provides access to the case reports of:
1.National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus
2.Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus
3.National Advertising Review Board (NARB)
The case reports cover “topics such as implied claims; puffery; ‘clear and conspicuous’; ‘competent and reliable scientific evidence’; ‘truth and accuracy'” and cover numerous product categories such as cosmetics, drugs and health aids, household products, food & beverages, entertainment, toys, websites, and more.
This resource is available for free to faculty and students of SJMC solely due to the generosity of NARC. For non-institutions and non-affiliated groups, this archive costs $6,600 per year or $350 per case report.
The archive comes with a set number of accounts associated with our subscription, and there are still two spots for faculty who would like their own login information to the database. If you are interested in receiving your own login, please let me know via email. All J-school students will be able to access the database through the Journalism Reading Room website with a general login.
For more information on the NARC and this new resource, please browse the resource by going to: http://www.narcpartners.org, clicking on ‘reports’ and then choosing ‘NARC online archives’. Login information is only required when downloading individual case reports.
This is an exciting new resource that only happened because of Deb–three cheers for her!
I am also pleased to announce that the Journalism Reading Room has a new book shelf near the windows with titles available for checkout. These books are on loan from Memorial Library and represent the newest titles the library system has purchased for Journalism. Feel free to browse the books in person or visit the JRR website to see a complete list.
